US in the news: Private bank poaches from Merrill Lynch WM

A round-up of the latest people moves and M&A deals in North America

People Moves

First Republic Bank

The private banking firm has named Arif Ahmed as managing director and wealth manager at First Republic Investment Management.

Ahmed, who has 21 years of experience, will provide investment management, retirement planning, investment consulting and other wealth management services to individuals and families.

Prior to First Republic, Ahmed worked for Merrill Lynch for 21 years, where he was managing director and part of the firm’s private wealth management team.

Nutter Investment Advisors

Richard Sipley has been appointed president of the US investment manager.

Sipley joins from Wellesley Investment Partners, where he was chief investment officer.

This comes ahead of the departure of chief executive Barnes Abbott, who has been in the role for over 30 years.

Abbott will continue as a senior consultant to Nutter Investment Advisors after 30 June 2019.

Quadrant Private Wealth (Quadrant)

The registered investment adviser has hired Antonio Vidal as a private wealth adviser.

Vidal previously served as chief financial officer and chief compliance officer of Compass Group.

Prior to Compass, he was principal and treasurer of Financorp Group International in New York.

Magnus Financial Group (Magnus)

Paul Hoerrner Jr has joined the wealth management firm as a managing director.

He has over 25 years’ experience in the financial services sector.

Prior to joining Magnus, Hoerrner was a managing director and wealth management adviser at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management.

Boston Financial Management

The employee-owned wealth manager has named Abby Pyshogeos as the head of its Portland, Maine office.

Psyhogeos will serve as managing director and wealth manager.

She has over 30 years of experience from Bainco International Investors and FL Putnam, where she served as managing director and president, and senior client adviser, respectively.

Associate wealth manager Katie Exchange will help with the running of the firm’s newly established office.

New business

IronRidge Wealth Management

Three advisers who managed $520m (£412m, €467m) in assets at Morgan Stanley have created an independent firm affiliated with Raymond James.

Giovanni Duran, Joseph Cataldo and Nick Penna have formed IronRidge Wealth Management.

Joining them is client services manager Lauren Lamartine.

Duran began his professional career more than 20 years ago at Gibraltar Securities. In 2002, he joined Smith Barney, which was acquired by Morgan Stanley in 2008.

Cataldo began his career in 1990 at Halpert & Co and joined Smith Barney in 1997, while Penna joined Morgan Stanley in 2011.
