US in the news: Asset and wealth firm hires CEO

A round up of the latest people moves and M&A deals in North America

People moves

CI Financial

The asset and wealth management company has named Kurt MacAlpine as chief executive and director.

MacAlpine previously served as executive vice president and head of global distribution for WisdomTree Asset Management.

Prior to that, he was leader of the North American asset management practice at law firm McKinsey & Company.

Magnus Financial Group

The investment advisory firm has hired Louis Sorsaia as chief operating officer.

Sorsaia has 20 years’ experience in financial services and spent the majority of his career working at Deutsche Bank Securities.

He will be responsible for the oversight of the front and back office operations.

Athena Capital Advisors

Beth Lehman has joined the registered investment adviser (RIA) as deputy general counsel and chief compliance officer.

She will manage the regulatory compliance team and be responsible for formulating and implementing all compliance policies within the firm.

Lehman was general counsel and chief compliance officer for RIA firm GW & Wade.

Previously, she worked for KPMG in its regulatory risk and compliance practice group and as senior counsel in the enforcement division of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Bryn Mawr Trust (BMT)

John Bonvetti Jr has joined the firm’s wealth division as a senior vice president and senior investment adviser.

Bonvetti reports to Mark Bradford, wealth director at BMT’s Berwyn, Pennsylvania office.

He has more than 15 years of financial services experience.

Most recently, he was a vice present and private banker at Butterfield Bank in Hamilton, Bermuda.

TrinityPoint Wealth

The firm, which is part of the Focus Financial network, has hired Michael Smiley as a managing partner who will continue to serve clients out of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Smiley provides financial planning and portfolio management services to individuals and families.

He was president of North Carolina-based wealth firm Penland Legacy Advisors for 17 years.

Rockefeller Capital Management

Laura Tyson and Robert Matza have joined the firm as senior advisers.

Both will advise Rockefeller on strategic solutions for clients, institutions and communities.

Matza recently retired as president, partner and member of the executive committee from GoldenTree Asset Management.

Earlier in his career, Matza was president and chief operating officer at Neuberger Berman

Tyson is a professor of the Graduate School at the University of California, Berkeley.

Spearhead

The wealth management and administration solutions provider has hired brothers Putnam Kling as director of wealth management and ESG specialist, and Dr Christian Kling as senior adviser and ESG specialist.

Prior to joining Spearhead, Putnam Kling served as chief executive of Enhance Advisors, an RIA based in Florida.

Dr Kling co-founded Enhance Advisors and acted as senior investment analyst for the firm’s life enhancement investments strategy.

Geller Advisors

The financial advisory firm has appointed Scott Bush as head of client development and experience, and Mark Rubin as head of tax.

Bush joins Geller from JP Morgan Asset Management, where he was a managing director.

Rubin moves from FTI Consulting, where he was a senior managing director.

WSFS Wealth Investment Group

Bryan McNamara and Perry Sutton have joined the WSFS Bank subsidiary as a financial adviser and as vice president and financial adviser, respectively.

McNamara is based in southeastern Pennsylvania and joins WSFS from AIG/Valic, where he was most recently a financial consultant.

Sutton will focus on assisting clients in southern New Jersey.

He was most recently a financial consultant at Citizens Bank and previously provided advice to clients at Morgan Stanley and Edward Jones Investments.

M&A

Lido Advisors

The California-based RIA has merged with Coliseum Wealth Management, an independent financial advisory firm in the Washington, DC region.

Coliseum’s Scott Berman will join Lido Advisors as vice president of private client services.

He will be involved in sourcing clients, as well as the recruitment of additional advisers for the region.

Jordenne Nash will also join Lido Advisors as senior operations associate.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
