Alex Burghart has been appointed as parliamentary under secretary of state in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the government department confirmed to International Adviser.
The appointment was approved by King Charles III, Burghart shared on social media.
Burghart has been a member of parliament for Brentwood and Ongar since 2017 and was part of the Work and Pensions Select Committee and the Joint Committee on Human Rights.
He then went on to work as a parliamentary private secretary to the attorney general, Geoffrey Cox, and to the Northern Ireland secretary of state, Karen Bradley.
In September 2021, he took on the role of minister for skills within the Department for Education until July 2022, when he left the role as part of a flood of resignations that led to the collapse of Boris Johnson’s government.
Opperman
Burghart takes over from Guy Opperman, who officially stepped down on 20 September 2022 following the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
He was relieved of his duties on 8 September but waited for the mourning period to be over before announcing his departure.
Opperman was the longest serving pensions minister with over five years in the role.
