Singapore's population is around 5.3 million. If every individual in the city-state is considered to have a phone, this means that around 8% of the phones are now on the register.

At a press conference, the PDPC added that of these registered numbers, 75% of the consumers chose to block marketing from voice calls, SMS and fax, the Straits Times reported.

Early indications showed that companies were taking the new rules that are now in force seriously, the commission stated.

So far, the PDPC has received two complaints from consumers about unsolicited SMSes. The consumers said they had registered their numbers on the DNC last month but received marketing text messages on Jan 2.

From today, organisations conducting telemarketing activities are required to check their marketing list with the Do Not Call (DNC) Registry unless they have the individual's clear and unambiguous consent, if the marketing message is exempted, or if an exception applies.
