Vanguard has identified its new chief executive, while Aberdeen Asset Management has appointed a head of Luxembourg and named two heavy-hitting independent non-executive directors to the board of Aberdeen Life. AJ Bell has a new technical director.

Vanguard

Vanguard’s chief investment officer Tim Buckley will succeed Bill McNabb and become the company’s fourth chief executive since it was founded in 1975. Buckley will assume his new role on 1 January 2018.

Buckley was also elected president and director of Vanguard by the board of directors on Thursday. He joined Vanguard in 1991 and has been a member of the senior leadership team since 2001. He was appointed chief investment officer in 2013.

McNabb (60) will remain chairman of the board after he steps down from the helm in December 2017, having been appointed chief executive in 2008 and chairman in 2009. He said that “it is the right time for a new leader”.

Greg Davis, global head of Vanguard’s fixed income group, succeeds Buckley as chief investment officer.

Aberdeen Asset Management

Aberdeen AM has appointed Steen Foldberg as head of Luxembourg and managing director of Aberdeen Global Services, the group’s principal cross-border management company. Aberdeen has had an office in the Duchy since 2006 and manages over 90 funds with AUM of around €57bn (£50.3bn, $65bn).

Foldberg joins Aberdeen from Julius Baer where he was a managing director. He will report to Gary Marshall, head of product at Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Life, the unit-linked insurance subsidiary of Aberdeen AM, has appointed two independent non-executive directors to its board, succeeding retiring directors Chris Little and Philip Skerrett.

Otto Thoresen will serve as chairman and David Hare as a senior non-executive director.

Thoresen was previously director general of the Association of British Insurers (ABI) until the end of January 2015 and served on its board from 2005. He also served as chief executive with Aegon Group from 2005 to 2011 and was chief finance officer between 2000 and 2005.

Hare qualified as an actuary in 1988 and has held various actuarial, marketing and financial risk management roles in a number of life insurers.

AJ Bell

AJ Bell has appointed Peter Hopkins to the role of technical director, with responsibility for overseeing the platforms’ technical support for financial advisers and its involvement in industry consultations. His appointment is with immediate effect.

Hopkins previously worked at both HM Revenue and Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions. At HMRC, he led the pension simplification project which resulted in the new pension rules that came into effect on 6th April 2006.

Axa Investment Managers

Axa IM’s Rosenberg Equities has appointed Kathryn McDonald as head of sustainable investing as part of their commitment to integrating ESG (environmental, social and governance) considerations into all of Axa IM Rosenberg Equities’ portfolios by the end of 2017.

McDonald has over 20 years’ experience in the asset management industry. She joined Axa IM in 1999 and has held several positions including director of investment strategy, senior strategist for Emerging Markets and Asia ex-Japan and head of investments for Australia/New Zealand.

Brown Shipley

Paul Ryder-Morris has been named a client director in Brown Shipley’s London office. He brings with him 20 years’ experience and will be responsible for helping develop and manage new client relationships at Brown Shipley.

Ryder-Morris was previously a private banker at HSBC Private Bank and Barclays Wealth and Investment Management. His appointment is intended to strengthen the London team’s ability to deliver wealth management services to high net worth individuals.
