Insurer creates corporate development director role as Swiss bank hires five from UBS

Royal London

The insurer has appointed Steve Murray to the newly created role of corporate development director, subject to regulatory approval.

Murray will report to incoming group chief executive Barry O’Dwyer and will head up M&A activity, group strategy and operational efficiency.

He joins from Aberdeen Standard Investments, where he is currently deputy head of private markets.

Credit Suisse

The Swiss private bank and wealth manager has made five hires for its UK domestic team

Alistair Conner has joined as chief operating officer for Credit Suisse UK, as well as the UK market area.

Conner was previously chief operating officer of UBS Wealth Management UK.

He will report into Christian Berchem, chief executive of Credit Suisse UK.

Helen McDonald joins as a director in the ultra-high net worth team and UK head of foundations and impact advisory services.

McDonald will have dual roles between UK domestic, focused on developing the coverage of charity and foundation clients, and working with Marisa Drew, chief executive of the impact advisory and finance (IAF) department.

She also joins the bank from UBS Wealth Management, where she was most recently head of charities, foundations and social investing.

David Fagan, director, Brad Werner, vice-president, and James Houstoun, vice president, will also join from UBS Wealth Management.

The three relationship managers worked together to build out the UK resident non-dom (RND) business at UBS.

They will primarily focus on RND and financial services professionals in the private equity and hedge fund industries.

Hansard

The financial services group has named Hideshi Tokoi as general manager for its recently established office in Japan.

Hideshi has over 35 years’ experience in the sector.

He spent time at Goldman Sachs, Citicorp International Securities, Citibank, Mitsui Sumitomo MetLife Insurance, Credit Suisse Securities and most recently Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance, where he was deputy general manager.

Mattioli Woods

The UK wealth manager has hired James Wilson and Ravi Tara as chief compliance and risk officer, and group finance director, respectively.

Both will report to chief financial officer Nathan Imlach.

Wilson has over 30 years’ financial services experience, including roles at the Law Society of Scotland, the Financial Services Authority (now Financial Conduct Authority) and senior positions at IFG Group, Royal Bank of Scotland Group, Standard Life, TD Wealth International, Speirs & Jeffrey and FNZ.

Tara has experience in operational delivery and cost efficiency from his in previous roles at Capita, Weetabix Food Company, JP Morgan, Barclays Capital and PwC.

Elsewhere, group managing director Murray Smith has decided to stand down from the board.

Smith will continue in a full-time role as founder director to the group and his focus will be on his client portfolio, acquisitions and acting as an ambassador for Mattioli Woods.

His management responsibilities will be given to deputy group managing director Michael Wright.

RBC Wealth Management

Annabel Bosman will take up the role of managing director and head of relationship management at the bank, International Adviser understands.

Based in London, she will report to Ross Jennings, head of sales & relationship management, RBC Wealth Management – International.

Bosman was joint head of relationship management at Julius Baer International.

She joined the bank in 2015 from Deutsche Bank and has also worked at Citigroup and Credit Suisse.

Pictet Asset Management

Junjie Watkins has become chief executive for Asia ex-Japan for the asset manager.

Based in Hong Kong, Watkins will be responsible for all business development and client-related matters in the region, with management oversight of all other activities.

Watkins joins Pictet AM from TCW Asia, where she was head of investment solutions of Asia.

She replaces Amy Cho, who left the firm last November.

Clarien Bank

The Bermudian-based bank has hired Bruce Jackson as executive vice president and chief wealth management officer.

He has 33 years’ experience in financial services. He was an institutional investment banker for 15 years.

Jackson later formed an unnamed investment management firm to create discretionary energy portfolios for global family office, high net worth, mutual fund and institutional clients.

Generali Insurance Asset Management (GIAM)

The asset management company of the Generali Group has promoted Antonio Pilato to head of investments.

Pilato was previously GIAM’s head of trading and investment management support.

Prior to this, he had held various management positions in trading desk, portfolio engineering and derivatives at the Generali Group.

Based in Milan and reporting to GIAM chief executive Francesco Martorana, Pilato will lead a team of more than 50 investment professionals in Paris, Trieste, Cologne and Milan.

He replaces Martorana, who had held the head of investments responsibility on an interim basis, in addition to his chief executive role.
