Phoenix names senior leadership in wake of Standard Life acquisition, Stenham Wealth appoints RBC alumni in Jersey, and River and Mercantile names Australian rugby legend to lead ops down under.

Phoenix

Phoenix Group has revealed the executive management team that will manage the enlarged business with Standard Life Assurance.

Susan McInnes, an existing member of the Phoenix Executive Committee (Exco), will become chief executive of Standard Life Assurance. She will take up her new role at the Edinburgh office when, subject to regulatory approval, the transaction completes in Q3 2018.

McInnes’ responsibilities will include the management of all the open book and new business that the strategic partnership with Standard Life Aberdeen will bring to Phoenix.

She joined Phoenix in 2009 and led the group’s customer functions until earlier this year when she was appointed chief risk officer.

Jonathan Pears, currently chief risk officer at Standard Life, will replace McInnes as Phoenix Group chief risk officer.

Jim McConville, Phoenix group finance director, will continue in this role, and take on additional responsibilities as group director, Scotland.

John McGuigan, currently managing director, customer operations at Standard Life, will join as group head of customer; a new group function focused on having the best customer experience across the enlarged group. McGuigan will retain his existing Standard Life Assurance responsibilities.

Reporting to the chief executive Clive Bannister, Andy Moss remains the chief executive of Phoenix Life, and will oversee Phoenix’s traditional heritage business of closed-book activity.

Stenham

Stenham, a privately held asset management group, has recruited local investment professional Tracey Walker, as director. Walker’s previous roles include RBC Wealth Management and Standard Bank.

She will be based in Jersey working alongside the existing investment team, managing investment portfolios and building business relationships with high net worth individuals, advisers and intermediaries.

River and Mercantile

London-based investment manager River and Mercantile has appointed former Westpac executive and Australian rugby union international Tim Horan to managing director of its newly launched Australia and New Zealand operation.

Horan’s appointment coincides with the launch of River and Mercantile’s first Australian registered unit trust, available to institutional investors from this month.

He joins River and Mercantile from Westpac where he headed the sports and entertainment business in private and premium banking for more than seven years. Prior to this, Horan was head of capital raising at Meridian Funds Management.

Brooks Macdonald

Brooks Macdonald has appointed Simon Brookes as a director, financial adviser.

London-based Brookes was previously a director with James Hambro and Partners for four years and which he joined from Towry where he spent six years as a wealth adviser.

State Street

Asset manager State Street Global Advisors has named Marcus Miholich as managing director and head of capital markets for Emea and Apac, effective immediately.

Miholich will continue to be based in London and report to Tim Coyne, global head of Capital Markets for the Global SPDR business.

He joined the Global SPDR business in October 2017 from Haitong Securities where he was managing director and head of Delta One, ETF and Cash Equity Trading.  Previous roles include senior positions in sales and trading at Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley.

A Swedish national, Miholich was most recently responsible for State Street ETFs’ Nordic business development strategy.

Thomas Miller

Insurance services provider Thomas Miller has appointed David Smith as group risk and compliance director.

Reporting to the group’s chief operating officer, Ann Haugh, Smith will be responsible for the Thomas Miller risk and compliance framework and will co-ordinate regulatory activity across the group.

Smith joins from Just Group where he was director of enterprise risk. He has also worked for Partnership Assurance, KPMG and Savills.
