Newton Investment Management

Paul Brain, deputy CIO of multi-asset, has retired after 40 years as an investment manager.

Brain joined Newton in 2004 and led the firm’s fixed income team, overseeing a range of global bond strategies including the Global Dynamic Bond strategy, which launched in 2006.

He had previously held senior roles within the fixed income desks at MSG & Partners, Investec and Credit Suisse.

CFA UK

Chief executive Will Goodhart is set to step down in early 2025 after 18 years there.

The board will work with recruitment agency Sapphire Partners to appoint a new CEO. The CFA said it would share further details around the role and hiring process with members later this month.

Under Goodhart’s stewardship, CFA UK has seen its membership double to 12,000 members. His tenure as CEO saw the first certificate in ESG investing launch in 2019, which is now run globally by the CFA Institute.

Square Mile Investment Consulting and Research

The firm has announced the formation of the Square Mile sustainability board to govern and guide the firm’s sustainability initiatives, research and products.

The board includes three leading figures in the field of responsible investment: Neville White, who will act as its chair, and Bev Shah and Alan Whittle who join as non-executive directors.

Aubrey Capital Management

Co-founder and director Sharon Bentley-Hamlyn is set to retire at the end of September leading to the closure of two funds.

The Aubrey European Conviction fund, managed by Bentley-Hamlyn since 2008, will close on 18 September as she departs the firm.

The fund has held just a 5% overlap with the index with a strategy size of €23.1m as of August 2024. Since it’s inception, it has returned 212% compared with an index return of 150.4%. Aubrey also intends to close the SVS Aubrey Europe Ex UK fund.

Axa Investment Managers

The firm has hired Dominic Byrne as head of global equities for Axa IM Core, to lead the wider global equity team.

Before the appointment, Byrne spent nearly 25 years at abrdn, where he was most recently head of global equities. He began his career in 2001 at Standard Life, remaining with the company as it merged into abrdn in 2017.

Oberon Investments

The asset manager has hired David Thompson from Investec, who joins after 18 years at the firm.

At Investec, Thompson was a senior portfolio manager, responsible for running over £180m of client assets.

Thompson will join Oberon’s investment management division. He has previously held roles at Credit Suisse and Kleinwort Benson
