PEOPLE MOVES: Momentum UK, Russell Investments, Hermes

Industry veteran Peter Mann has reappeared at Momentum UK, while Russell Investments is banking on an ex-BlackRock man to head up its Europe, Middle East and Africa region. Hermes has named a head of fixed income.

Momentum UK

Global investment firm Momentum UK has appointed Peter Mann as non-executive director. He joins the board of Momentum Global Investment Management, as the business looks to expand its outcome-based investment propositions in the UK retail market. 

With a career spanning 30 years, Mann began his work in financial services with Scottish Amicable before becoming development director and then chief executive of Bankhall, between 2002 and 2008. He later joined Skandia UK, becoming chief executive in 2009.

Prior to his retirement in 2014, Mann acted as vice chairman at Old Mutual Wealth Management Group.

Russell Investments

Global asset manager Russell Investments has announced that Joseph Linhares has joined the firm as head of Emea. Based in London, he will report directly to chief executive Len Brennan and serve as a member of the firm’s executive committee.

Linhares spent the last 16 years at BlackRock in a variety of leadership positions in Emea and the US. Part of his tenure at BlackRock was spent in London as the firm’s managing director and head of Emea iShares.

Hermes Investment Management

Andrew Jackson has been named head of fixed income at Hermes, reporting to head of investment Eoin Murray. Based in London, Jackson will be responsible for leading the strategic development of the credit and direct lending investment teams.

With nearly 25 years’ investment experience, Jackson joins from Cairn Capital where he was chief investment officer, head of investment committee and a senior member of the executive management committee. At Cairn, Jackson was responsible for the development of the asset management business. He was previously vice president, European credit structuring at Bank of America, and has held roles with Fitch Ratings and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Lombard International

Lombard International has appointed Sandra Locke to the new role of executive vice president, global director of HR. In this role, she will be responsible for developing the global HR strategy.

Reporting to executive chairman John Hillman, Locke will be partnering with the leadership teams in Europe, the US, Latin America and Asia to ensure that Lombard International’s human capital initiatives are aligned with its global goals.

Locke joins from Guy Carpenter, part of Marsh & McLennan, where she was managing director, global head of HR, and a member of the executive committee.

Man GLG

Discretionary investment management business of Man Group has appointed William Ferreira to the newly created role of head of machine learning. He will be responsible for developing the firm’s machine learning capabilities, providing the portfolio managers with tools and techniques to support their analysis and decision-making processes.

He will also work with Man GLG’s teams on the application and interpretation of machine learning techniques in relation to analysing news and social media, market events and announcements, and the visualisation of complex data.

Ferreira joins from Florin Court Capital, having previously worked as technology manager for Man AHL from 2011 to 2014. In his role at Man AHL, he acted as chief technology officer for Man Systematic Strategies. Before this, he was an executive director at JP Morgan and held roles at Merrill Lynch, GSA and CQS.

Kames Capital

Kames Capital has promoted Phil Haworth to the role of deputy head of equities. Haworth will support head of equities Stephen Adams in running Kames’ 30-strong equities team. He will continue to co-manage the Kames UK Equity Fund and Aegon UK Equity Pension Fund, as well as contributing to Kames’ asset allocation research.

Haworth joined Kames, then Aegon Asset Management, in 1995 directly from Oxford University.

Tilney

UK investment management and financial planning group Tilney has recruited Darren Steadman as a financial planner for its Bristol office. He joins from HSBC where he was a premier client manager. 

Steadman was previously a financial adviser at IFA Bishop Fleming and at St James’s Place, having also worked at other banks as a client relationship manager including at Santander and Bank of Scotland. He brings with him significant experience building relationships with high net worth private clients.

Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission

Ashley Alder has been appointed chief executive of the SFC for another three-year term, effective from 1 October 2017.

Alder took the helm of the Hong Kong regulator on 1 October 2011, having previously served as executive director, corporate finance from 2001 to 2004.

Prior to re-joining the SFC, Alder was head of Asia of the international law firm Herbert Smith, focusing on equity capital markets as well as mergers and acquisitions, private equity and venture capital. He also handled regulatory and compliance work.

UK Financial Conduct Authority

The board of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has appointed an additional six members to the FCA’s Regulatory Decisions Committee (RDC).

The newest members are Karen Johnston and Nick Lord. They join Stuart McIntosh, Philip Marsden, Robin Mason and Malcolm Nicholson who were appointed last year.

The RDC is responsible for taking certain regulatory decisions on behalf of the FCA relating to enforcement and supervisory actions, and firm authorisation and individual approval applications. Membership is drawn from across a spectrum of business, consumer and industry experience.
