Fund manager founder retires, as Swiss giant makes board reshuffle

Marlborough Group

Founder of Marlborough Fund Managers Geoff Hitchin is retiring from the industry at 79, after 34 years of running the Marlborough Global Bond fund.

He set up the company in 1986 after spending 20 years as a tax officer and consultant.

Hitchin then rolled out the Marlborough Global Bond fund in 1987 and the Marlborough Bond Income fund in 1998.

His fixed interest team colleagues Danny Fox and Niall McDermott will take over the running of the fund.

UBS

The global wealth manager has made some changes to its Swiss arm’s board of directors.

Markus Ronner is to be proposed as chairman at UBS’ annual general meeting in April 2022, succeeding Lukas Gähwiler, who has been nominated as vice chairman of UBS Group.

Barbara Lambert will become an independent member of the board, as Hubert Achermann will not stand for re-election after more than six years in the role.

Ronner joined UBS in 1981 and has held several senior positions, most recently as group chief compliance and governance officer in 2018, which he will maintain.

Lambert joins from Banque Pictet & Cie where she was a member of the board since 2018.

Financial Conduct Authority

The UK regulator has hired Stephen Braviner Roman as general council and member of its executive committee, effective from February 2022.

He will join from the government legal department where he currently serves as director of general litigation, justice and security.

Megan Butler will step down as executive director of transformation in the spring of 2022. She joined the FCA from the Bank of England in 2016 as executive director of supervision for investment, wholesale and specialist.

Emily Shepperd will lead the regulator’s transformation programme alongside her role as executive director of authorisations.

Quilter Private Client Advisers

The financial planning arm of Quilter has made two senior hires, following the merger of the business with Quilter Cheviot.

Sarah Waring has taken on the role of financial planning director. She has been at the firm since 2015, initially establishing the Chester office and then as proposition director.

Sammy Licence will become head of commercial development after being at the Quilter Group for six years.

Tilney Smith & Williamson (TSW)

Sian Steele has been hired as head of private client tax services at the wealth management group.

She currently works as a business consultant, adviser and portfolio non-executive director.

RBC Asia

The wealth management division of Royal Bank of Canada has made two senior appointments in Asia.

Ignatius Chong has been promoted to head of enterprise private clients for Asia. He was previously head or private banking for greater China.

Nick Chan has been named as head of private banking north Asia. He joins from StormHarbour Securities where he served as deputy chief executive and head of family office for Asia Pacific.

Bridgewater

The Isle of Man-based trust firm has made two senior hires.

Mark Veale has become managing director, while Patrick McCarrick has taken on the role of compliance director.

Veale joined in November 2021, after he held a similar role at LJ Fiduciary.

McCarrick was previously at Knox House Trust.

VAR Capital

The London-based investment management and family office business has named James Fleming as vice chairman of its advisory board.

He was most recently chief executive of multi-family office Sandaire and vice chairman of Arbuthnot Latham Private Bank.
