Jersey Finance appoints a former IMF economist as its new chairman while Quilter Cheviot’s Jersey office makes a notable investment hire. HSBC names a new investment strategist on Asia as UBS promotes its head of Asia-Pacific.

Jersey Finance, the organisation that promotes the commercial interests of the Island, has appointed former senior economist for the International Monetary Fund, Gunther Thumann as chairman.

Thumann, who has a PhD in economics and statistics from the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nurnberg, has previous experience at the German civil service as well as his role at the IMF.

After working at Salomon Brothers in London in the late 1990s, Thumann founded a consultancy specialising in central banks.

In 2007, Thumann was appointed partner, chief executive and chairman of the board of Brevan Howard Capital Management in Jersey. During his ten-year stint, Thumann built the offshore business and established the Jersey business as the hub of the Brevan Howard Group.

After retiring from Brevan Howard in January, Thumann will now suceed Robert Christensen who resigned as Jersey Finance chairman when he was elected as Jurat of Jersey’s Royal Court.

Quilter Cheviot Jersey

Quilter Cheviot’s Jersey office has hired investment manager Lee Morris.

Lee is a chartered wealth manager with over 15 years’ experience within investment banking and portfolio management.  He joins the firm as an investment director and will focus on the fixed interest markets as well as on international activities.

Lee joins Quilter Cheviot from investment firm Smith and Williamson International where he was a director of investment management. He was previously a senior investment manager at Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management.

HSBC Private Banking

Patrick Ho has been hired as Asia investment strategist for HSBC’s private banking business.

Based in Hong Kong, he will support the development of regional investment and product strategies across all asset classes for clients in Asia, according to a statement from the bank. He will also play a key role in contributing to thematic research, said Fan Cheuk-wan, Asia head of investment strategy and advisory.

Ho has 23 years of experience in equity research, portfolio strategy and asset allocation, which includes 11 years working at private banks.

He was most recently the director of Greater China equity research at Credit Suisse Private Bank for about a year. Before that, he spent ten years at the UBS Wealth Management, and was Asia-Pacific head of thematic research and deputy head of equity before he left in September 2016, according to his Linkedin account.

UBS WM

UBS Wealth Management announced that Bryan Crawford has been promoted as global head of alternatives and syndicate distribution. His role had been head of Asia-Pacific.

Based in Hong Kong, Crawford has worked at UBS for about five years, according to his Linkedin profile.

Crawford will be responsible for the distribution of hedge funds, private equity, real estate and sustainable investing, the firm said. He will also work with UBS Investment Bank, external distributors and UBS Wealth Management clients on public equity and debt capital market transactions.

Smith and Williamson

Smith and Williamson has elevated several staff from across the company to partner level, it announced today.

In total, 13 promotions have been made, with five across the investment management business, which serves private clients, trustees, charities and institutions.

Nuala Devine, Caroline Dyson, Lisa Henderson, Graeme Little and Louise Thornhill have been made partners in the investment management team.

Meanwhile, Andrew Cunnington, who also advises private clients, has been made a partner in the financial services team.

The other promotions are across the accounting and business, business tax, private client tax, and recovery and restructuring areas of the firm.

Troy AM

Troy Asset Management has hired BlackRock’s Mark Wharrier to become assistant manager on the £3.5bn Trojan Income fund.

At BlackRock, Wharrier co-managed both the £412m BlackRock UK Income fund and the £50m Income and Growth investment trust.

He will join Troy in October and work alongside Francis Brooke and Hugo Ure, the existing lead and assistant managers on both the Trojan Income fund and the Troy Income & Growth Trust.

At BlackRock, David Goldman, who co-manages the open-ended UK Income fund with Wharrier and Adam Avigdori, has been appointed co-manager of the investment trust alongside current co-manager Avigdori with immediate effect.

Prior to joining BlackRock in 2013, Wharrier worked at NewSmith Asset Management, having joined the industry in 1994 working at Mercury Asset Management (which later became Merrill Lynch Investment Managers).
