PEOPLE MOVES: Investec, Waverton, Bank Syz

Investment management recruitment lifts off in Scotland, while Swiss private bank targets domestic growth

Investec Wealth & Investment

The firm has added two directors to its Glasgow office. Arlene Ewing joins as divisional director, while Sammer Nabi is named senior investment director.

Ewing was previously assistant director at Brewin Dolphin in the city and brings with her 30 years’ experience in financial services.

David Paterson, who has led Investec’s Glasgow office since 2016, will continue to serve clients in his role as an investment manager, while handing over leadership of the Glasgow office to Ewing.

Nabi was a wealth relationship manager at Fidelity International. He previously worked at Citi, Julius Baer, Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs.

Waverton Investment Management

Derek Mclay has been named business development manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland at Waverton. Reporting to head of intermediary sales, Mark Barrington, Mclay will focus on promoting the firm’s dedicated adviser offering in the region.

He joins from Fundamental Asset Management, where he was a Scotland-based BDM. He also worked in relationship development roles at Cornelian Asset Managers, Standard Life and BNY Mellon.

Bank Syz

Dominik Staffelbach has been named head of Switzerland to lead its domestic expansion strategy. Staffelbach, who will be based in Zurich, joins the bank with more than two decades of private banking experience in Switzerland and around the world.

Before joining Bank Syz, he worked at Rahn+Bodmer, where he was responsible for entrepreneurs. Prior to this, he spent more than 15 years at the UBS Group, where he held various managerial and non-managerial positions in Switzerland and abroad, with a focus on developing ultra-high-net-worth clients globally.

Reporting into Nicolas Syz, head of private banking, Staffelbach will be responsible for developing and implementing Syz’s strategy for the Swiss market by leveraging its wide range of difficult-to-access wealth management services and alternative investments.

Association of International Life Offices  

Canada Life International’s John McNamara has been elected chair of Ailo, replacing Mark Armstrong of Prudential International, who will continue to support the management committee for a further year.

Conor O’Mahony from Octium Life has been re-elected as treasurer.

Sogelife’s Jean Elia has been named members’ representative for Luxembourg, while Utmost Wealth’s Charlotte Barham has been re-elected to represent members on the Isle of Man.

Dara Hurley of Octium Life and Inge de Wolf of Swiss Life continue their terms as members’ representatives for Ireland and Luxembourg, respectively.

All appointments were unanimously approved by Ailo’s members.

Tenet Group

The financial adviser network has named Paul Day as regional business manager to support its ongoing growth strategy. He joins from Clever Lending, where he has been director of business development since 2015.

His role will see him ‘draw on his extensive expertise and be responsible for introducing advisers and firms to Tenet Network Services’.

BNY Mellon

Newton Investment Management, part of BNY Mellon Investment Management, has appointed Therese Niklasson as global head of sustainable investment. She joins from Ninety One (previously Investec Asset Management), where she was most recently global head of sustainability.

Reporting directly to Euan Munro, chief executive, she will join the Newton executive committee and be responsible for driving the firm’s strategic plan for responsible and sustainable investment globally.

As part of this role, Niklasson will oversee the responsible research agenda and lead the integration, measurement and evidencing of ESG factors within the investment processes across strategies and asset classes.

Brown Shipley

The Quintet Private Bank business has appointed Kenny Cummings as a financial planner, based in Edinburgh.

He will report to Matt Hoyne, head of the local office, and work with Rebecca Williams, head wealth planning in the UK.

Cummings has been a financial adviser since 2017 and joins Brown Shipley from Spence & Spence IFA.

JTC

Chief commercial officer Dean Blackburn has been appointed to the group holdings board in recognition of the integral role he has played in the group’s growth since joining JTC at the start of 2019.

In his expanded role, Blackburn will continue to work closely with the group chief executive and board, with a particular emphasis on working with the group heads of both institutional client services (ICS) and private client services (PCS) to deliver new organic and inorganic growth opportunities.

In other news, Tom Kimber has been named an associate director within JTC’s private client services division in Dubai. He will be responsible for a portfolio of international and domestic UAE entity structures, as well as help grow the firm’s presence in the Middle East.

VG

The Jersey-based independent trust, corporate and fund administration solutions provider has appointed Kevin Cooper as director of operations.

In the role, Cooper will oversee the development and efficient working of VG’s business and will drive projects to enhance the company’s operations. He will serve as the director responsible for the performance of the operations, projects, tech transformation and ICT support services teams.

He was previously at Nautilus Trust Company and later First Names Group, after it acquired Nautilus in 2016. He played a key role in integrating new teams following acquisitions and streamlining internal processes to improve productivity.

Edison Group

The investment research and advisory company has hired Patrick Yau as managing director, investor relations.

He has joined the London office where he will work to further develop Edison’ strategic European investor relations advisory service.

Yau began his career working at the London Stock Exchange before becoming an equity research analyst in 1994 when he joined Killik & Co to establish its research team. He then moved into institutional broking, where he held positions at Nomura, Credit Suisse, Bridgewell, Canaccord and Peel Hunt.
