PEOPLE MOVES: Generali, JM Finn, Goldman Sachs

Insurer names hires global head of M&A, while wealth firm names CEO

Generali 

Global insurance provider Generali has hired Massimiliano Ottochian to become global head of mergers and acquisitions. 

He joins from Deutsche Bank where he served as managing director for the financial institutions department since 2009. 

Ottochian will be responsible for identifying growth opportunities in the market and contributing to the group’s consolidation. 

JM Finn 

JM Finn’s chief executive Steven Sussman will retire on 31 December 2020, and the firm’s investment director, Hugo Bedford, will take on the top job from 1 January 2021. 

Sussman will remain at the firm as non-executive chairman, as James Edgedale retires from his role as chair at the end of the year. 

Goldman Sachs 

Iain Drayton has been promoted to co-head of investment banking for Asia, excluding Japan. 

He is currently co-chief operating officer for Goldman Sachs Asia, Apac head of financial and strategic investors group and investment banking services team leader in the region. 

Drayton joined the US firm as a managing director in 2006 in Tokyo, before relocating to Hong Kong in 2010. 

IWP 

Les Cantlay has been promoted to chief risk officer at Independent Wealth Partners UK. 

He will lead the firm’s risk and compliance functions as well as improve effectiveness. 

Cantlay was previously a non-executive director at IWP. 

Wren 

London-based multi-family office Wren has hired Adam Wethered as executive chairman. 

He will succeed Christopher Kemball when he retires, with Kemball remaining at the firm as a non-executive director and shareholder of the company. 

Wethered is the co-founder of Owl Private Office, which he recently de-merged into a separate business. 

HSBC GAM 

Stefano Caleffi has joined HSBC Global Asset Management in the newly created role of head of EFT sales for southern Europe. 

He will be based in Milan and be responsible for business development across Italy, Spain and Portugal. 

Previously, he worked in the equities division of Credit Suisse First Boston. 

AJ Bell 

Investment platform AJ Bell has hired Paul Pugh as head of strategic accounts. 

He will focus on growing the distribution of the firm’s solutions. 

Pugh was previously senior manager for strategic alliances at Legal & General. 

Mediolanum International Funds 

The Irish subsidiary of Mediolanum has recruited Jonty Starbuck as senior equity portfolio manager. 

He will be responsible for the firm’s quality equity strategies. 

Starbuck spent the last five years at Davy Asset Management in Dublin where he served as lead portfolio manager for the Davy Global Brands fund. 

Vontobel 

Simon Lue-Fong has joined the asset management firm as head of its fixed-income boutique. 

He used to work at Pictet where he was responsible for the company’s emerging markets fixed income franchise. 

Equilibrium 

Financial planning firm Equilibrium strengthened its team with the addition of eight hires. 

Seven people took on the role of client managers, while Sarah Hammond became head of risk and compliance after 12 years at Lift-Financial, where she served as head of paraplanning and then head of risk management.
