Osborne is reportedly closing in on appointing a successor to Martin Wheatley, who was ousted from his role in July 2015 after Osborne declined to renew his five-year contract, reports Sky News.

Speaking in July after he stepped down, Wheatley said: “I am disappointed to be moving on and I do with a sense of unfinished business.”

Wheatley’s contract had been due to end in March 2016. Osborne said at the time that the FCA needed “different leadership”.

Shortlist

The shortlist is understood to include acting FCA chief executive Tracey McDermott and chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), Greg Medcraft.

Medcraft was appointed ASIC chairman on 13 May 2011 for a five-year term, having joined as ASIC aa a commissioner in February 2009.

There is believed to be a third person in contention for the role who is yet to be named.

A number of prominent British figures from the banking and regulatory sectors have been rumoured to be under consideration; including Ed Richard, the former chief executive of Ofcom.
