NRIs to get degree equivalence in UAE

Wording issues meant many qualifications were not recognised in the Gulf region

The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi has revealed that Indians living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be able to receive equivalency for their degrees.

Non-resident Indians (NRIs) living in the country have faced many issues getting jobs due to the lack of clarity about the validity of their qualifications.

The main problem was the wording used by Indian universities, specifically differentiating between the internal and external marking of exams.

However, the Indian Ambassador in Abu Dhabi, Shri Navdeep Suri, met with the minister of education for the UAE clarifying that the word “external” referred to “the method of evaluation and not the place of study”.

Recognition of Indian degrees

The embassy said: “The Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi is happy to inform the Indian community that the ministry of education of the United Arab Emirates conveyed that it has reviewed the information provided through the ‘Action Plan for Academic and Administrative Reforms’ issued by the University Grant Commission, and it has come to know that the word ‘external’ in the mark sheet reflects the method of evaluation and not place of study and notified that it has no objection to equivalence those degrees that meets all other certificate equivalency criteria.

“Those applications that have been rejected previously, will be reviewed and equivalency letters would be issued after meeting all other certificate equivalency conditions.

“The ministry of education of the United Arab Emirates further informed that it is working on all such applications gradually and requested for co-operation from all concerned as it will take some time to review all these cases due to huge number of such applications.”

Indians are the largest expatriate community in the Gulf region, making up about 3.3 million people, around 30% of the total population in the country.
