Honorary chairman of Zurich Insurance Group dies

He held the roles of CEO and chairman during his nearly four decades with the company

The insurer paid tribute to Fritz Gerber on Monday, describing him as “one of the most influential business leaders in Switzerland during a period of formative development for the country’s modern, open economy”.

Born in 1929 in Huttwil, Switzerland; Gerber joined Zurich in 1958.

During his nearly 40 years with the company, he spent 17 as chief executive and 18 as chairman of the board of director before assuming his honorary role in 1995.

Man of vision

Zurich chairman Michel Liès said: “Fritz Gerber was a remarkable leader and is rightly considered one of the greatest company managers in Switzerland.

“At Zurich, his leadership was characterised by a far-sightedness, a strategic mindset and an ability to bring out the best in people.

“He significantly contributed to Zurich’s strategic positioning and commercial success.”

Group chief executive Mario Greco added: “We will miss his passion, his prudence and his clear thinking.

“We would like to thank Fritz Gerber for everything he did for our company.”
