An American, who fathered a child with a British woman in the UK, has been told he must continue to pay for her housing, despite their child living with him in North America.

The case began with the “briefest of relationships” leading to a birth in 2014.

In early 2015, the father moved to work in Canada, while the courts decided the child’s residence and the financial arrangements for his maintenance.

The court decided the child would spend eight weeks at a time in England and four in Canada. The father was also told to pay £5,500 ($7,160, €6,160) a month and give £700,000 to buy a house for the kid and his unemployed mother. The dad would get the house back when the child reached 18 years of age.

Two years later, after concerns were raised over the mother’s ability to parent, another court decided it was best for the toddler to go and live with his father in Canada. He then applied to have the financial arrangements with the mother varied.

The England and Wales family court agreed the maintenance should be cancelled but he should pay for her accommodation, since the child still visited, but a smaller property was more appropriate. His capital contribution fell from £700,000 to £200,000.
