Leopard Capital Cambodia manages Cambodia’s first investment fund, the $34m Leopard Cambodia Fund, a private equity fund launched in 2008.
Since launch, the fund has made 14 investments in a variety of sectors, including banking (Acleda Bank via ASA Plc), microfinance (IPR), hydropower (EDL Generation), electricity transmission (Greenside Holdings), telecommunications (CamGSM), and beverages (Kingdom Breweries, Tropical Beverage).
Thus far it has successfully exited three investments: CamGSM, EDL Generation, and Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority.
In addition to Cambodia and Grand Cayman, Leopard Cap has offices in Laos, Bangladesh, Haiti and Hong Kong, and is establishing presences in Myanmar and Bangladesh.
It is licensed by the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission for Type 4 (advising on securities) and Type 9 (asset management) activities.
Clayton is often quoted in the media on the subject of frontier investing, as he is one of a handful of Western investors who have been on the ground in Cambodia long enough to have developed expertise on that country and several others nearby. Earlier this year he was reported to have tipped Bangladesh and Myanmar (or Burma as it is sometimes called) as the next frontier markets markets to watch.
