Khor, who will be based in Singapore, starts his new role on 8 March and will join the group executive, reporting to Aviva group chief executive Mark Wilson. The appointment is still subject to regulatory approval.

Simon Machell, who has undertaken a wide range of roles with Aviva in the UK and internationally, most recently as chief executive for higher growth markets, will leave Aviva at the end of February.

Khor’s previous roles at AIA included chief executive and managing director of the company’s Malaysian business and regional executive responsible for a number of AIA’s South East Asian markets.

In November last year, AIA announced that it had appointed Bill Lisle, AIA’s group chief distribution officer, to lead the integration of ING Malaysia with AIA’s business in Malaysia, reporting to Ng Keng Hooi, regional chief executive.

Wilson said Khor had a wealth of insurance experience in Asia and the “requisite market and cultural knowledge”.

Before joining AIA, Khor was president and chief executive of Manulife Insurance (Malaysia), and his career has also encompassed working for British American Life and General Insurance, Hong Leog Assurance, John Hancock Insurance (Malaysia) and Malaysian American Insurance, where he started out as an actuarial assistant.

Aviva operates in eight markets in Asia covering India, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia and Vietnam.
