Justin Onuekwusi has been promoted to a newly created role of head of retail investments, EMEA at Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM).

Onuekwusi, who previously held the role of head of retail multi-asset funds, has been tasked with strengthening and growing the group’s retail investment proposition.

According to LGIM, the appointment is a strategic one as the group looks to drive and evolve its investment proposition and deliver a scalable and profitable retail business.

Onuekwusi, who will remain as a senior fund manager within LGIM’s £60bn ($81bn, €71.8bn) asset allocation team, will work closely with Steven de Vries, head of wholesale and retail (UK, Europe and Latin America) and James Crossley, head of UK retail distribution.

With nearly 20 years of experience in the pensions and investments industry, Onuekwusi joined LGIM from Aviva Investors in 2013. He will continue to be the lead fund manager on the group’s flagship Multi-Index and MPS ranges.

In a statement, LGIM said the appointment was recognition of Onuekwusi’s leadership and insight with intermediary clients.

Commenting on his promotion, Onuekwusi said: “It is a really exciting role and a chance to use my client and investment insight from working with thousands of advisers, manager researchers, wealth managers and intermediaries across the UK.”

He added: “Although my day-to-day priorities will continue as normal – managing funds and leading our retail multi-asset propositions – it’s a great opportunity to strengthen the wider LGIM retail investment offering.

“With clients concerned about ongoing market volatility and fee pressures, I will be working closely with our distribution leads Steven and James to make sure LGIM’s retail investment strategy is fit for purpose.”
