Former Irish rugby international player Brendan Mullin has appeared in court charged with stealing €578,000 from his ex-employer Bank of Ireland.
It followed an investigation by the National Economic Crime Bureau of Irish police force Garda, according to the BBC.
Mullin appeared before Dublin district court on 21 September 2021 and faces nine counts of stealing €578,000 (£495,937, $678,211) from Bank of Ireland between 2011 and 2013.
The former managing director of Bank of Ireland private banking is accused of deceiving two people to sign a payment instruction to make a gain for himself or cause a loss to another. He was also charged with five counts of false accounting.
The BBC reported that a detective told the court Mullin made no comment when informed of the charges he faced.
The former British and Irish Lions star was released on bail of his own bond of €10,000 and agreed to surrender his passport.
He is due back in court on 11 November 2021.
Matter under investigation
A spokesperson for Bank of Ireland said in a statement: “Bank of Ireland is liaising with An Garda Síochána in relation to a matter under investigation.
“Customer funds and accounts were not impacted by the matter, which was reported to An Garda Síochána by the bank.
“As this is the subject of an ongoing Garda investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
International Adviser also contacted Garda, but the police force declined to comment.
