A majority of Hong Kongs wealthiest individuals say they do not plan to have any children in the future, a South China Morning Post survey has revealed.

The results could have implications for those designing products for the market, as well as for those catering for high net worth individuals there.

According to the SCMP, “financial considerations” were the reason cited most by those who already have children and do not plan to have any more, while “the emotional burden of raising a child” was given as the reason those who don’t have any said they do not plan to.

“The poll results provide an insight into why the city’s fertility rate is the third-lowest in the world – only Macau and Singapore rank lower,” the SCMP said.

It added that the low birth rate had raised concerns of a “looming labour shortage”, and noted that a government manpower study in February had concluded that the special administrative region of China would run short of workers by 2018.
